The new students were welcomed by the authorities of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur during the orientation programme on Tuesday. The students were accompanied by their parents and guardians.
Though the orientation programme will continue till July 23, the students of both the undergraduate and postgraduate categories reached the campus on Tuesday and completed the formalities of registration and buying the items of the daily needs. Almost all the students have been allotted rooms in the hostels.
The authorities organised the orientation programme, which was spearheaded by deputy director R K Thereja, dean, Student Affairs, A K Ghosh and head counselling service, A R Harish. Over 850 undergraduate students and around 400 postgraduate students took part in the orientation programme one by one.
While the new students were congratulated for becoming part of IIT-Kanpur, they were also administered oath by Harish for giving their best in both academics and sports. They were also asked to take oath about maintaining the image of IIT-Kanpur. After the oath ceremony, Ghosh told the students about the conduct to be followed on the IIT-K campus.
"When your academic session will begin, you will be spending time in labs with seniors. During this period you will be exposed to seniors but do not hesistate and maintain communication with them. Maintain communication among yourselves as time spent on the campus with peers and seniors will be the best part of your life in the days to come," Ghosh said while addressing the students. The students should not fall in relationships that hamper their academics. He also added that the immature and irresponsible student cannot be the part of IIT-Kanpur.
Another teacher Sanjay Mittal showed them a slide to inform about the campus life and made them acquainted with the way the life goes on in IIT-Kanpur.
Meanwhile, with the coming of so many new students to the campus, the institute came alive. The freshers were trying to settle down on the campus.
The parents of were an elated lot to be on the IIT-K campus while the students were busy understanding the routes of the campus. The mess attached to the hostels were liked by them. The students and their parents were happy to dine at hostel and said that the mess is providing tasty food.
The shopping centre at the institute had also come alive. There was huge rush of students at the shopping centre to buy mattress, sim cards, stationery etc.
The shops in this small market had come up with everything that is required by students. The parents and the relatives, who had come with the students from places far off places, were making purchases of stuffs which are speciality of the city. The students are eagerly waiting for the academic session to begin from July 25.
