The State Association of Medical and Dental College Teachers (SAMDCOT) has demanded autonomous status for Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) at Shimla on the analogy of the apex medical institute of PGIMER, Chandigarh.
Addressing mediapersons, general secretary of SAMDCOT, Dr Rajesh Kashyap, said on Tuesday, "The state chief minister has expressed a desire to have a medical university in the state at many forums. The association welcomes this. Such a medical university will help improve standards of medical teaching and other facilities here. The CM has time and again talked about providing autonomous status to this premier medical institute here, but this is not materializing."
With autonomous status, the institute will be in a position to create standards of excellence comparable to norms laid by the National Knowledge Commission and Medical Council of India, he said.
Besides facilitating unhindered atmosphere for research activities, this will also ensure that suitable recruitment procedures are adopted for both teaching and non-teaching posts and collaboration with foreign medical universities and institutes will also be augmented, he added.
Suitable recruitment procedures would be adopted for both the teaching and non-teaching posts.
