MCA entrance exam on August 13

The Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, Kerala, has invited applications for an entrance examination to be held on August 13 in Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Kozhikode for admission to the three-year, six-semester, full-time Master of Computer Applications (MCA) course in 33 institutions affiliated to the University of Kerala, Mahatma Gandhi University, the University of Calicut or Kannur University and approved by the All India Council for Technical Education.

The two-hour entrance test will have 150 objective-type questions from mathematics, statistics, physics, chemistry, general knowledge, general English, and fundamentals of computer awareness. Each correct answer gets three marks, while one mark will be deducted for each incorrect response.

The rank list will be published on the basis of the test score. Separate lists will be published for those belonging to the Socially and Educationally Backward Communities, the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes, and persons with disabilities.

The seats will be allotted on the basis of the ranks and the option of institutions, which include the College of Engineering, Sreekaryam, Thiruvananthapuram; Government Engineering College, Thrissur; the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, Kottayam; TKM College of Engineering, Kollam; Mar Athanasius College of Engineering, Kothamangalam; colleges of applied sciences, Kozhikode and Palakkad; LBS College of Engineering, Kasaragod; and several private self-financing institutions.

The MCA course intends to give students a sound background in computing, business functions, and mathematics relevant to information technology.

The applicant should be Indian citizens. The qualification required for each university are as follows.

Mahatma Gandhi and Kannur universities: A pass in the degree examination in any discipline with mathematics at the Plus Two level or a degree with mathematics or statistics as one of the subjects or the BCA degree.

University of Kerala: A Bachelor's degree in any discipline with mathematics, statistics, computer science, computer applications or engineering and technology as main, subsidiary, or core subject with at least 50 per cent marks.

University of Calicut: A Bachelor's degree with mathematics as one of the subjects with at least 50 per cent marks. Five per cent relaxation of marks will be allowed to applicants from Socially and Educationally Backward Communities. Those belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes require the pass mark.
How to apply

Apply online on www.cee-kerala.org till 5 p.m. on August 1. Separate links have been provided for applicants in the general category, the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes, and the Socially and Economically Backward Communities.

The application fee is Rs.800 (Rs.400 for the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes). Take a printout of the online application and affix a passport- size photograph and send it, along with the fee and attested true copies of certificates, to the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, Housing Board Buildings, 5th Floor, Santhinagar, Thiruvananthapuram – 695 001 by registered post so as to reach the addressee on or before 5 p.m. on August 1.
