Updated on: Monday, July 18, 2011

New Emerging Technology Skills (NETS) centre, which would offer vocational education and training to vulnerable and marginalised, has been inaugurated in Karaikudi by the Union Home Minister, P Chidambaram.

The NETS centre, equipped with modern appliances, laboratories, class rooms and student amenities, has been set up under a project funded by the European Union and the Department of Science and Technology.

Inaugurating the centre last night in his native district, Chidambaram said it would provide "hands on" skills training to the unemployed youth to develop their competency to suit the industry standards.

Tiruchirappalli Regional Engineering College - Science & Technology Entrepreneurs Park (TREC-STEP) is the lead implementing agency and Vivekananda Institute of Bio-technology (VIB), West Bengal and Science & Technology Park (STP) Pune are partners.

Similar NETS centres would be established in West Bengal and Maharashtra by the respective partners.

Private sector involvement at various stages of project implementation such as curriculum vetting and guest lectures was the key highlight of the project, the release said.

For the future growth of the NETS Nodal centres, more investment would be mobilised from multi-stake holders, and good project results would be documented.
