PM's scientific advisor for more research in info security

Prime Minister's Scientific Advisor R Chidambaram today emphasised on the need of more research in information security.

"Information security has come to play a major role in today's computer era...One cannot not ignore the issue of cyber security...Efforts must be made to ensure computing and networks security. While research generates new knowledge, innovation seeks to add economic or strategic value to it," he said at the inauguration of two-day 'Garuda-National Knowledge Network partners meet' here.

Garuda is the national grid computing initiative of the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC).

Chidambaram said research must have four layers research that was highly high-end and involving the country's highest intelligence on fundamental issues; direct basic research where issues relating to India on long term basis are taken up in the specified area (example TB), research that was pre-competitive and finally applied research where research is used for industry products and applications.

Chidambaram also called for "altruistic collaborative innovation" on issues of global importance like climate change or a pandemic disease.

Speaking on the occasion, Uday B Desai, Director IIT Hyderabad, called for "opening up" of the National Knowledge Grid, the multi-gigabit pan India network for providing a unified high speed network backbone for all knowledge-related institutions, aimed at enabling researchers and academicians from persified technologies and geographies to work towards national development in critical and advanced emerging scientific arenas.

He said the "opening up" would prove especially beneficial to tier-two and three colleges.

The participants also strongly advocated creating awareness about Garuda, the national grid computing initiative of the of Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) among the people and its various other activities.

The two-day meet would foucs on present status and road map of Garuda-NKN experience of the scientific community and case studies on the impact of this partnership in the field of open source drug discovery, galaxy framework, climate modelling, bio informatics, material science. The meet aims and exploring and sharing more complex and signiicant sicentific technologies among the fraternity.
