A prominent students body in Manipur has decided to immediately ban the sale of intoxicants near educational institutions in the district.
The All Manipur Students Union, Imphal West district branch (AMSU-IWDB) today said in a statement that no one would be allowed to sell intoxicants and tobacco within 100 metres of educational institutes in the district.
Sixty percent of school and college going teenagers in the state were addicted to various intoxicants causing degradation of their moral and health condition, the statement said.
The students' body appealed to the public to cooperate with it to check the sale of intoxicants near the educational institutes and warned those who would defy their campaign with dire consequences.
AMSU is the biggest students' body having its branches in all the districts and had earlier played major role in major issues, including agitation against illegal influx of foreigners from neighbouring country into the state, official sources said.
