Madras HC reserves order on Uniform System of School Education

Madras high court on Tuesday reserved its order on the Uniform System of School Education (Samacheer Kalvi),after hearing the arguments of the AIADMK government.

Guru Krishnakumar, additional advocate general representing Tamil Nadu in the Supreme Court appeared in the case and argued that the "amendment (to the USSE Act) is to implement the legislation properly and the state has every power to award the legislation." He cited several Supreme Court judgments in support of the argument.

He also argued that the previous DMK government did not appoint a committee on the Samacheer Kalvi as directed by a divisional bench.

Since no time frame was framed for the implementation of the education system by the divisional bench, Krishnakumar argued how can the present government's move be seen as an attempt to delay the implementation.

On the amount of time spent by each member of the nine-member committee, he said though the team met only few times, they received the material on June 17 and had time till June 22, before they met for the first time and the "work was done."

Earlier, the government submitted the minutes of the committee meeting as ordered by the court yesterday.

After hearing arguments, a Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice E Y Eqbal and Justice T S Sivagnanam,said written arguments shall be submitted to the court by Wednesday morning

AIADMK government is mired in a controversy over its decision to defer implementation of USSE.The apex court had turned down government's plea against High Court staying its amendment to USSE Act 2010 to defer its implementation and had directed that USSE should continue to be implemented for Classes I and IV during the present academic year.

The Uniform System of School Education was formulated by previous DMK government.
