The Karnataka government has enhanced the income limit for SC/STs and OBCs for education purposes.
The revision for SC/STs has gone up from Rs 40,000 to Rs 2 lakh and from Rs 11,000 to Rs 44,000 for OBCs. "At least 12 lakh families will benefit from this, taking the total to 20 lakh,'' social welfare minister A Narayanswamy told reporters on Monday. The income limit was raised on the Centre's directive.
But the OBCs have been not so lucky. The government has enhanced income limit of parents from Rs 11,000 to Rs 44,000 though the Centre had recommended a Rs 2-lakh ceiling. "Extending the limit to Rs 2 lakh limit would have hurt the prospects of weaker sections among SC/STs," the minister said.
Narayanswamy said the Backward Class Commission will get a new chief within a fortnight.
