GCW declares merit list

Government College for Women, one of the best colleges in the city, is out with a merit list for various undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Many students' are dejected after having a look at the merit list while some are rejoicing. The highest cutoff is that for BCA. While for BCA, the cutoff is 88.5%, the corresponding figure for BSc non-medical is 82.3%. Meanwhile, the admissions would start from July 11.

Sarabha Nagar resident Monika Girhotra said she got 88% in Class XII and was sure of getting admission, but the way the merit has shot up has surprised her. She said she missed out on the admission by percentage points, but she hopes she is placed high up on the waiting list. Model Town resident Harpreet Kaur said as she saw her name in the merit list, she thanked God that her efforts in class XII had paid off. BRS Nagar resident Shuchita Sharma said the competition was tough but she made it, taking a step forward towards fulfilling her parents' dreams.

College principal Gurminder Kaur said against the 40 seats in BCA, more than 850 students had applied for admission. So, the competition was tough and the student placed on top in the merit list had scored 95% in Class XII. Not only this, in BSc non-medical, against 160 seats, 750 applicants had applied. Similar was the case with MA Punjabi, wherein against 50 seats, 143 applicants had shown their interest.
