Chennai: With the objective to promote research, the state government has decided to start a dedicated unitary technical university.
The University comprising of four premier colleges of Anna University (Chennai), which will begin functioning from this academic year consist of Guindy College of Engineering, Madras Institute of Technology, A.C. College of Technology and School of Architecture and Planning.
The Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy said that since professors of the university were increasingly occupied with functions such as admissions, examinations and monitoring of infrastructure in 136 affiliated colleges, they hardly had time for research.
Experts in technical education had suggested the creation of a unitary (unified Single) university to offer world-class Master's programmes and research facilities. The government would initiate the new university this year itself, Ponmudy said.
Commenting on the move, the Anna University (Chennai) vice-chancellor P Mannar Jawahar said the creation of a unitary university would bring about high quality research.
