Only universities authorised to issue degrees: MP Govt

Updated on: Monday, July 11, 2011

Madhya Pradesh Government has told educational institutions that only the state universities were authorised to issue degrees to qualifying students, and if other institutes are found doing so, they would be penalised.

At a high-level meeting with Principals of 43 colleges of the state here yesterday, Principal Secretary (Higher Education) B P Singh said only universities have been authorised to award degrees to students and not the inpidual institutions running their own courses.

The district authorities concerned should file FIR against the erring institutions and penalise them, Singh said.

Asking Principals to observe the new academic session as "quality of education" year, Singh advised them to conduct adequate number of classes to raise education standard.

Singh directed them to ensure that no ragging takes place in the new session. For this the college should interact and coordinate with the police for safety of new students. Anti-ragging committee be formed, if required, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner (Higher Education) V S Niranjan said the educational calendar must be followed while conducting semester examinations.

There were some institutions which had no affiliation with any university, but they were issuing degrees. Such degrees were illegal, Niranjan added.

Inspector General of Police D S Sanger said generally a dispute between senior and junior students was painted as ragging. So the College Principals should investigate such matters thoroughly.
