The Industrial Training Institute (ITI) for girls at Aundh has registered significant success in the last three years, recording 100% placements of candidates completing the new two-year course, ‘Centre of excellence for electronics sector’. Encouraged by the feat, the institute is planning to start two new professional courses from the next academic year and proposals for the same are with the Union government.
According to an ITI official, the new course (exclusively for girls) was started in 2008 with a focus on the electronics sector. The maximum intake is 126 seats and students are allowed to opt for the advanced course in the second year. ITI principal WV Kothekar said, “After undergoing training in specialised modules, more than 100 girls are now placed in partner industries of ITI. Many girls have also been absorbed as technicians and operators in the electronics sector in various companies and units in Pune.”
He said that apart from classroom lectures, the course also offers practical training for upto six months to the students, who are given a stipend during the training period. In the second year of the course, students are given the option to select any of the three subjects – embedded systems, communication systems and UPS/ inverter controls. Kothekar said that the Union government has approved the centre of excellence for electronics course and girls can enroll after passing their class X examination.
“After having witnessed the success of the course, we have now submitted a proposal to the government seeking approval for two new courses in the field of computer operator (programming assistance) and dress designing. Both these courses will also provide lessons of entrepreneurship and management and will together have approximately 100 seats,” he said, adding, “One-year professional courses – like interior decoration and designing, fruit and vegetable processing and skin and hair care – have also received a good response.”
Besides the learning centre exclusively for girls, the Aundh ITI also offers various courses for boys after they have successfully completed their class X or class XII examinations. The total intake for these courses is 494, of which around 25% seats are reserved for girls.
