Insights into professional courses

Updated on: Tuesday, June 23, 2009

Leading experts and resource persons involved with higher education and management had taken part in the pre-admission guidance programmes conducted by The Hindu-Educationplus during the past week in Kozhikode, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. The range of topics covered were diverse, and proved useful to the hundreds of students and parents who attended these sessions (on June 18 at Kozhikode, June 19 at Kochi and June 21 at Thiruvananthapuram).

The Hindu-Educationplus presents here some of the key points made by them at the different centres.

Joint Commissioner of Entrance Examinations K. Reghunadhan Pillai (at the three centres):

•Internet facility is a must for registering options. Students who do not Internet facility could approach Option Facilitation Centres (OFCs).

•Log on to web site www.cee.kerala.gov.in\keam for more details.

•Stick to time schedule declared by the office of the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations. Students should note down the dates for various procedures and remember them.

•Do not reveal the key number or password to anybody.

•Do not disclose the password even to the authorities of the college where you are joining.

•Always remember to save what you have entered and also log out of the page. If you do not log out, there is a chance of somebody entering your page and tampering with your entries.

•Carefulness, precision and diligence are required in the registration process.

•Students have the advantage of re-arranging or deleting higher options. They should cancel the higher options, if they are satisfied with the allotment given by the Office of the Commissioner of Entrance Examinations.
Choosing a college

Mr B.S. Warrier (all the three centres)

•Good mathematical knowledge is necessary to take up engineering courses.

•Parents should check the facilities available in each professional college and also verify the quality of teachers. Parents and students need to cross-check the extent of campus placements in each college .

•First priority in selecting a course is the aptitude of the candidate.

•Learning ability of the student, financial capacity of parents, duration of course, opportunities for higher education and quick employability are other factors.
Companies look for…

T.K.Suresh Babu, professor and head, Department of Training and Placement, National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT-C) (on recruitment trends):

•Be ready to work outside Kerala—at NIT-C this year out of 105 companies visiting for campus placement, only two were from Kerala.

•Companies evaluate academic performance. There would be cut-offs like first class and only those who have first class can take part in the recruitment process. So never compromise on academic performance.

•Different companies have different levels of interviews.

•Though many students prefer electronics and communication engineering as the first choice, it need not fetch them high salaries during placement. It all depends on how you perform during recruitment process and in academics.
