District Collector U Sagayam urged government school teachers to improve English speaking and writing skills of students to make them on par with students of private schools in cities.
Sagayam, who was reviewing the standard of Government schools in the district, said it was teachers' duty to help students remain in rural areas and get the best education.
Teachers, apart from teaching as per government guidelines, should take interest in students' welfare and improve their skills in English and Tamil. They should encourage students to study more and improve their memory power and communication skills, he said.
Four teachers and headmasters of 15 schools had been selected for improving English teaching abilities and computer handling abilities of the students, he added.
