Former President A P J Abdul Kalam advised students to work towards clean energy in line with global efforts for harnessing solar power and other non-conventional energy sources for a more secure future.
India ranks fifth in areas like nuclear science and space research, Kalam, himself a nuclear scientist, said expressing hope that the younger generation would work hard so that India can become a leader in various technological spheres.
"The young generation has to work very hard. I believe India can become leader in various technology," Kalam said at an awards function of city's premier South Point High School.
The former President, awarded among others a student suffering from Wilson's disease and donated Rs 2.5 lakh to three welfare organisations in the city.
Kalam handed over the Priyambada Birla Brave Hearts award to Suroshmi Basu, a Class seventh standard student saluting her brave spirit.
She suffers from a rare disease (Wilson's disease) which is a progressive worsening of handwriting, speech, stiffness of fingers and drooling. However, she tries to attend school and participates in all school programmes.
At the school's golden jubilee award ceremony, M P Birla Institute of Fundamental Research conferred the M P Birla Golden Jubilee Award on Kalam which carries a prize money of Rs 2.5 lakh.
But Kalam requested the authorities to disburse the money equally among three welfare organisations - Manovikas Kendra, Calcutta Muslim Orphanage and Shishu Bhavan of Missionaries of Charity.
