Community colleges get UGC nod

Chennai: The community colleges concept has got the approval from the UGC, said VC of IGNOU, Rajasekaran Pillai.

Inaugurating a workshop, jointly organised by IGNOU, Tamil Nadu Open University and Indian Centre for Research and Development of Community Education (ICRDCE), Mr Pillai said there were about 100 community colleges registered with IGNOU and the concept would help all those who dropped out from schools obtain a formal certificate for employment.
 
The state government had recently recognised the 250 colleges present in the Tamil Nadu, said Mr Pillai

The students can join and obtain associate degree after completing a two-year course after completing a preparatory course conducted by IGNOU or TNOU, and pursue their degree later, added Mr Pillai

TNOU vice-chancellor Ms Kalyani Anbuchelvan said the university was extending scholarship of Rs 1,000 to candidates undergoing training through community colleges and obtain certificates from TNOU
