Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has started four new 'research group programmes' in nanotechnology, informal business, media studies and small entrepreneurship. The university has plans to convert these programmes into fullfledged courses by next year.

Elaborating on the programmes, SK Sopory , vice-chancellor, JNU says, "These four programmes are in their initial stages. Though we have introduced them, it will take one year to turn them into proper degree courses for students."

The university has decided to change these research group programmes into MPhil and Phd courses by 2012 and later, in 2013, start MA courses in the same field.

According to Sopory, one of the main reasons for starting these four programmes as research groups is due to shortage of required faculty. He says, "We don't have enough faculty members to run these programmes as degree courses. As soon as we have an adequate number of teachers, there will be no delay in commencing these courses."

Sopory has already started the process of appointing faculty members and is hoping to finalise confirmation of all the teachers by the end of this year.

As far as admissions for the current academic year is concerned, MCA and economics are two courses which have gained popularity among students. There is a drop in students opting for biotechnology this year. Tek Chandani, advisor, JNU blames it on the restriction for admissions that has resulted in this drop.

He says, "To be able to apply for a course in biotechnology, as per university rules, a student should have passed BSc in 2009 and onwards. This rule was there last year too where BSc pass students from the year 2008 and onwards were eligible . Last year too the number of students was less for this course, but this year they are lesser."
