This year, admission records in some of the top colleges of DU reveal that girls have been more successful than boys. While girls have been taking over boys during admissions for the last few years, this year, enrolment of girl-candidates have been much more than boys from day one of the admission season. On the first day itself, Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) and Hindu College admitted 75% of girl-students.
SK Srivastava, principal, Hindu College , says, "Throughout the ongoing admission season, we have seen more girl candidates. On the very first day, 146 out of 205 candidates who were admitted were girls. After the third cut-off , we are hopeful to admit more boys now."
At SRCC too, the ratio of girls to boys has been very high. "The ratio of girls to boys in economics is 77:23 whereas the ratio of girls to boys in a discipline like commerce is 69:31," says PC Jain, principal SRCC.
Gender-bender
The Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode (IIMK) has inducted 341 students to its postgraduate programme (PGP) in the class of 2011-13. The batch will include 35% women. Out of the total number of 341 students admitted, 121 are women.
B-Tech programmes
NIIT University invites applications for its BTech programmes. The eligibility criterion for all courses, except biotechnology, is a minimum of 60% marks in class X and +2, with physics, chemistry and mathematics in +2 from any board in India or its equivalent from any other country. Students also have to be qualified in the JEE/AIEE/SAT examination. The eligibility criterion for biotechnology is a minimum of 60% marks in class X and +2.
