At least 10 colleges offering admissions based on Common Aptitude Test for English (CATE) scores are likely to keep the admission open for general candidates even in the fourth cutoff list. Compared to non-CATE colleges, the admission to the colleges accepting CATE has been slow.
Overall, 46 colleges in Delhi University offer BA (H) English, of which 21 are CATE colleges. In the third cutoff list declared on Saturday, 16 CATE colleges kept their admissions open against only two non-CATE colleges.
But the CATE colleges are vouching for the process, stating the experience has been good. "Though we are open for admissions in the third list, we are likely to close in the fourth list. True, the admission has been slow comparatively, but our experience has been good so far. One of the reasons for the slow admission could be that many English (H) aspirants are also aspirants for journalism (H) and the results have just been declared. So they are buying time and weighing their options. It has nothing to do with the CATE per say," said the media coordinator of Kamala Nehru College, Geetesh Nirban.
Lady Shri Ram, which was in two minds this year of whether to join CATE, closed its admissions in the second list. An official said: "Our dilemma was purely logistical. We had a very good experience last year as we got good students who would have never been able to join our college on the basis of Class XII marks."
