Students love Bangalore

Bangalore is top of the mind for many youngsters when it comes to education. With some of the premier institutions located here and the quality education offered, it has become a favourite educational destination for students.

Principals of colleges said that the city offers various courses from engineering, medical to art and fashion. Interestingly, Bangalore University alone has over 500 colleges affiliated to it.

V G Joseph, Chairman, Garden City Group of Institutions, said that the fee structure and availability of various options has been the reason for the increasing number of students. "In our college alone, we have students from 59 countries mostly from the Indian sub-continent besides African countries,'' he said, adding, "Institutions in Delhi and Pune offer similar fee structures; unlike in Bangalore where fee structure varies from one institution to another for the same course. So, students come here.'' Another reason was the warmth with which Bangalore accepts those from other states. The city is also relatively safe. Plus, Bangalore offers plenty of job opportunities.

K N Balasubramanya Murthy, principal of a wellknown college, attributed national laboratories located in Bangalore as one of the reasons for it to turn into an education hub. "We have HAL, NAL, DRDO, all in Bangalore.'' Murthy said that right from the beginning Karnataka encouraged setting up of industries and private institutions especially in Bangalore.

K Rajanikanth, principal, M S Ramaiah Institute of Technology (MSRIT) said that a lot of initiatives were taken during the time of the Mysore Maharajas, which have yielded fruit now. So also the IT boom in late 80s. Companies located in Bangalore are another advantage, he explained.

Students said that affordability and the weather are the main reasons why they prefer to study here. Donna Joseph, a 4th semester Mass Communication student is a native of Kerala but was born and brought up in Saudi Arabia. "I would visit Bangalore often. I like the city; it was through word-of-mouth I learnt that Bangalore had good educational institutions. Also, the fees in some good institutes in place like Pune were very high.'' She added that it was easier to adjust in Bangalore.

Jobin Babu Varghese, 4th semester MBA student chose Bangalore because it offers a lot of exposure to a variety of experiences. "The city is cool all the time. This weather is good for studying. Moreover, there are a lot of industries, which offer good learning experience,'' he said.
