2 Mysore colleges get Rs. 12.5 crore for tech upgrade

The Mysore-based National Institute of Engineering (NIE) and the Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering, Mysore, have each been awarded a grant of Rs. 12.5 crore under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme II (TEQIP) by the World Bank and the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Thirty-one colleges in the country have been selected for TEQIP II. The NIE was also one of the colleges that had been awarded a grant under TEQIP I for 2004-2009, a press release from the institution said here.

TEQIP has been envisaged by the Ministry of Human Resource Development as a long-term programme of about 10 to 12 years, to be implemented in phases for the transformation of the technical education system, with World Bank assistance.

According to TEQIP plans, each phase is required to be designed on the basis of lessons learnt from the implementation of the earlier phase, the release added.

TEQIP I started a process of reform in 127 institutions. The process needed to be sustained and scaled up to consolidate gains in the system and take the transformation to a higher level, the release added, and which would be done by TEQIP II.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Government of Karnataka and the NIE in this regard.
Grant of Rs. 228 crore

Minister for Higher Education V.S. Acharya, in his address after signing the MoU with the institutes in Bangalore on Friday, said that Phase I and II of TEQIP being implemented in the State had a grant component of Rs. 228 crore, the cost of which was being shared by the Centre and State Government share in the ratio of 75:25, according to the release.

TEQIP II will focus on accelerating growth in M.Tech and Ph.D. programmes, e-governance, industrial collaboration, research and development and innovation.
