The Regional Transport Office launched a drive to verify documents and safety provisions of vehicles operated by educational institutions, here on Saturday.
All school and college vehicles plying in Nagapattinam and Vedaranyam were checked for licence, insurance, pollution control certificate, FC, driving licence and experience of drivers. Vehicles were also screened for first aid kits, emergency exits, feasibility condition and speed control devices.
Regional Transport Officer S.Swaminathan told The Hindu the drive was based on the instructions of the Minister for Fisheries during the review meeting of all line departments last week. “We were directed to verify our computer records to ensure that vehicles run by educational institutions were in order in terms of valid papers and documentation. We felt we would physically check all the vehicles,” he said.
Over 107 vehicles were screened for feasibility conditions in Nagapattinam. A similar drive will be taken up at Mayiladuthurai and Sirkazhi for Saturday and Sunday. Drivers have been forbidden from use of mobile phones.
