'There should be 30 pc increase in educational institutions' says the Union HRD Minister Mr.Kapil Sibal.
With strict cut-off marks making admission into reputed institutions difficult, Kapil Sibal said the Centre has plans to increase the number of colleges and universities in the country by 30 per cent.
We have 31,000 colleges and about 600 universities in our country. Only 14 out of 100 youth in the age group between 18 and 24 are going to colleges. If we can increase 30 percent from the present 14 per cent college-going students in the next nine years more students can go to colleges," Sibal told reporters.
Accordingly there should be an increase of 30 percent of colleges and universities for which funds are required and private institutions should be given permission (to increase the institutions)," he said. Sibal had recently expressed concern over reputed colleges in Delhi and Mumbai setting between 97 per cent and 100 per cent as cut-off marks for students to get admission to their institutions this academic year.
In contrast, the ratio of college going students in other countries was 70 per cent, he said. "This is the difference of development and developing economy," the minister said, adding there would be "quality changes" in the educational system in the country in the coming years.
By 2014, all villagers would be connected with cyber optics under the National Knowledge Network while it would not take much time when students could write examinations in their local languages through National Translation Mission, Sibal said.
