Bangalore: Karnataka's first ever private university would be established by the Azim Premji Education Foundation, the state government announced .
A bill to facilitate setting up of the university would be introduced in the coming legislature session, Urban Development Minister S Suresh Kumar told reporters
The Foundation, which is already working in the field of education in the state, would contribute the statutory endowment fund of Rs 25 crore.
The self-financing university would undertake teaching, training and R & D in fields like elementary and secondary education,education management and education policy.
The University would have right to open branches elsewhere in the country, but Karnataka would remain its headquarters, Kumar and Higher Education Minister Aravind Limbavali said.
After Premji, Chairman of software major Wipro, approached the state with the proposal a few months ago, the BJP government in its 2009-10 budget had promised to encourage setting up of private universities in the state.
The Azim Premji foundation is currently involved in imparting computer literacy in schools
