The state education department's plan of offering classes XI and XII in colleges does not seem to have interested many students as only few have approached city colleges to take admission in medical and non-medical streams. With the last date for depositing forms close at hand, some colleges have not even got 50% applications as compared to the number of seats.
The department had come up with the plan since colleges already have necessary laboratories and other infrastructure for science students.
Directorate of public instruction (colleges) had announced to start class XI and XII in colleges that will be affiliated to Punjab School Education Board (PSEB). Some colleges started the programme last year and some are going to start this term.
However, the students' response has got college administrations worried about how they will be able to fill seats. According to their plans, colleges will display their merit list in a couple of days because they want to complete all formalities this month and start classes in the first week of July.
SCD Government College principal Jasbir Kaur Makkar said most schools admit students after the pre-board exams. ''So many students take admission during that time. Among those interested to take admission in colleges the majority are from government schools,'' she said.
Arya College principal T L Joshi said convent and public school students generally study CBSE courses so they don't like to get admission in PSEB schools.
Paramjeet Kaur Ghumar, principal of SDP College for Women said, ''Parents are narrow minded and don't want their kids to got to 'college' so there isn't any cut throat competition for these admissions.''
Interestingly though, more girls have applied for class XI in colleges than boys.
