More changes for teacher training colleges and courses

To curb sub-standard private teacher training institutions, the NCTE will have new set of regulations for the institutions.

The chairperson, NCTE, Mohammad Akhtar Siddiqui said that  'Teacher training in India' was getting diluted over the years. There are good, bad and even worse institutes offering teacher education programmes.

The council has already shut down more than 150 sub-standard institutes. However, along with this, there is also a desperate need to improve the quality of education in the existing institutes.

The council is considering having a national level Teacher Eligibility Test on the lines of National Eligibility Test (NET) to maintain faculty standard. According to the new norms, the minimum mark requirement for admission into a BEd course has been raised from 45% to 50%. In the days to come, only those with a Masters or a PhD degree in one subject, Masters in education (MEd) and a National Eligibility Test (NET) score, would be eligible to apply as a faculty member at any of the teacher-training institutes.

As for as curriculum was concerned, the Chairperson said, that is was revised, keeping in mind the National Curriculum Framework (NCF-2005). Content has been prepared for student teachers to know how to incorporate peace education in every subject that they would be teaching.

According to Siddiqui, the council has no idea to improve teacher education in India as this would lead only to sluggish growth. The main emphasis would be on pre-service teacher training.

The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) will come out with a new curriculum for teacher-training courses and teacher training colleges.
