Vijay Darda, Congress MP and chairman of the Lokmat media group, has been presented with an international jurists award for his "seminal role" in the field of legal education in India's rural areas.
Rt Hon Lord Phillips, President of the Supreme Court of the UK, presented the award to Darda at the international conference of jurists for judicial reform at the Crown Plaza here last night.
The citation read Darda, President of Vidya Prasarak Mandal, has been chosen for the award "for maintenance of the highest standards of legal education".
"He has played a seminal role in improving the legal education system in rural areas," it said.
V Kamaraja, IGP, Rohtak Range in Haryana, got an award for Law & Order - for his examplary contribution to the society by maintaining law and order and enhancing the confidence of the underprivileged people in the affairs of the State.
Darda said the award would strengthen his resolve to see the "poor and the needy people got justice."
Justice Muzammel Hossain, Chief Justice of Bangladesh who is also vice-president of the International Council of Jurists, presided over the session.
