It’s time for a reality check for those who thought home science has lost its sheen and is of interest to housewives alone. With a day still left for the first cut-off admission, the Institute of Home Economics (IHE) of Delhi University has already filled almost one-third of the BSc (H) home science. According to IHE, on previous occasions, the college generally gets around 10 students in the first phase of the admission. In the BSc (general) home science, too, it has received 56 candidates in the first three days, a significant rise as compared to previous years. “This year, the demand for home science courses has almost doubled. In all, we have admitted 83 students for both courses,” said Dr. Chanchal, admission convener, IHE.
IHE’s home science courses have gained popularity after inclusion of market-oriented subjects like fashion and apparel designing, radio, film-making, etc. They had witnessed a lean period for the past few years, Chanchal said. Another reason cited for the growth in popularity is the increased awareness and revised eligibility criteria. “Before this, only science students were eligible for pursuing home science (pass). But now students from humanities and commerce are also eligible to pursue it,” she said. “Moreover, I think students are now more aware about the course and its structure and have done away with misconceptions attached with the course.”
Nupur Sethi, a student aspiring to be a fashion designer, reiterated the point. Initially, it was very difficult for her to explain to her friends that she would pursue home science. “But after looking at the course structure, I realised how much the course has to offer me. I can become a fashion designer or a nutritionist or a dietician,” Nupur said. “I scored just 78 per cent. But this course has a lot to offer.”
