Meghalaya Cabinet approves free and compulsory education

The Meghalaya cabinet approved the rules for Right of Children for Free and Compulsory Education, an act passed by the Parliament in 2009.

Meghalaya Education Minister R C Laloo said the rules will pave the way for implementation of the act in the state.

"It seeks to ensure free and compulsory education to all children between 6 to 14 years. No child will be held back, expelled during the period and they will not have to face board exams," Laloo said.

A certificate will be issued to the child after he completes the elementary education.

The environment in the schools will have to be child friendly and the authorities will have to put in place a proper assessment system, he said.

Augmentation of teachers' capacity by way of adequate training would be another exercise. The entire system should be should be in consonance with the central law, Laloo said.

The government is also contemplating on providing scholarships to those youth who aspire to be teachers so that they can undergo the requisite training before appointment as teachers, he said.
