20 students from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee, and Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (NSIT), Delhi, have joined together to teach students for IIT-JEE exam.
Only with the aim to help students from socially and economically backward, to facilitate them to score a better rank at IIT-JEE entrance exam, this novel initiative was started by these students, Alumnus.
Many students, although talented were unable to secure good ranks in the entrance exam owing to their economic background, observed Mani Bansal, an Alumni from IIT-Roorkee. As they cannot enroll for coaching due to the high fees charged by institutes, they are unable to compete, said the Alumini. But, if they were given proper guidance can score good ranks in IIT-JEE, he told.
To start off, the students created a website that would function as virtual classroom, particularly to save time and money of the candidates (from travelling to other cities).
The website contains information about the exam, preparation tips, sample test papers, etc. The team provides CD’s to the young deprived aspirants with recorded lectures of IIT and NSIT students. The student can listen to these lectures at his / her own pace.
To those enrolled in our two-year mentorship programme a mentor would be provided. The role of the mentor would be to guide a student through the two years of his / her preparation, said Gupta, who had graduated from NSIT.
Gupta and his friend Bansal had envisaged the idea of starting e-learning services for IIT aspirants during their college days.
Although noble, the Alumnus do not offer at free of cost. A minimum of Rs 15,000 is collected from the students, especially to meet salaries of the mentors, as a cost for the two-year mentorship programme.
When the coaching institutes across the country charge not less than a Lakh, the whole idea is to provide low-cost coaching to poor students, says a member.
