Pai to co-chair study group on economics school

Former Infosys board member Mohandas Pai will co-chair a study group to prepare a blueprint for the Bangalore School of Economics to be set up by Bangalore University.

The academic council cleared the constitution of the seven-member study group chaired by vice-chancellor N Prabhu Dev to prepare a draft vision statement for the school, suggest its governance structure and propose the course of study. Former chief secretary B K Bhattacharya, IIIT-B director S Sadagopan, IIM-B professor Rupa Chandra and noted economist Parthasarathi Shome are other members of the study group. The report is expected to be out in two months.

ON THE NOTICEBOARD

* Set up a research council to promote research at postgraduate and undergraduate levels and assess its quality. This year, BU plans to set aside 10% of its budget for research

* Abolition of grace marks in UG and PG courses deferred to next academic year. Earlier, it was to come into effect from November 4, 2010

* MSc Geology course will be kept in abeyance for lack of students. Only MSc Applied Geology course will be offered next year; to be open for students from non-geology courses too

* University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering students to study intellectual property rights and Right to Information Act during seventh and eighth semesters

* PhD entrance test and course work conducted by Institute for Social and Economic Change (Bangalore) will be considered equivalent to that of BU PhD entrance test and course work
