At the recently concluded second Africa-India forum summit at Addis Ababa, the prime minister of India, Manmohan Singh, announced the implementation of several projects in Africa. This is primarily to strengthen the partnership between both these countries. Among the projects to be enforced, Ahmedabad-based Entrepreneurship Development Institute has been assigned by the Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India the task of setting up entrepreneurship development centres in five select African countries. The countries will be identified by the EDI in consultation with the GoI and Association of African Countries.
These exclusive centres devoted to entrepreneurship development would work towards:
•Identifying entrepreneurial potential
•Aiding development to facilitate setting up of small ventures
•Eradicating limiting constraints such as information asymmetry, knowledge gaps or fear of failure, which affect large parts of the population
•Motivating the young generation to consider self-employment and entrepreneurship as a career
•Contributing significantly to improving the health of existing enterprises through counselling and training interventions.
•Organizing courses for support systems like banks and industry promotion agencies, planners and policy-makers to create a fostering environment for the establishment of small and medium enterprises
•Ensuring sustainability of the project by organizing Trainers’ Training Programs who could in turn organize entrepreneurship development programs and extend out-reach of the program.
This assignment is based on the successful endeavors of Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India in setting up four such centres, one each in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam, with support of the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India and its extensive experience of over 25 years of working in a number of African Countries.
