On June 8, the British Council Kolkata Teaching Centre held the final performance by the children of its Summer School, 2011 batch at Mahadevi Birla Girls Higher Secondary School on Darga Road, Park Circus. This was the second time that the Summer School was run by the Kolkata centre when it kept the children involved and thrilled about its course. The performance marked a culmination where the students showcased what they had learnt during their vacations. The show was divided according to the children’s ages:
the Whizz Kids (8 to 10 year olds),
the Shining Stars (11 and 12 year olds) and
the Ace Teens (13 to 15 year olds).
The Whizz Kids began the evening with the song It’s a Small World and moved on to share trivia about endangered animals, earthquakes and fire safety drills as practised at the British Council. The Shining Stars also began with a song and recited verses, interspersing them with events that have affected the world in the recent past. They had with them their idea of a utopia that would provide them with improved education. The Ace Teens, the eldest, shone best as they sang The Wavin’ Flag. Intelligent, humorous skits were performed that corrected common grammatical errors and stated that a course at the British Council was quite necessary. The interaction with the children present in the audience revealed their will to return to the centre for future courses, while the parents agreed on how this procedure has boosted their child’s confidence and interested him even in homework. Actors Arjun Chakraborty and Mimi Chakraborty appeared during the certificate and prize distribution ceremony where they awarded some students with medals for having been class team workers and class achievers.
