AICTE withdraws approval to 4 engineering colleges

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has withdrawn approval to four engineering colleges and has kept pending approvals of 30 more technical institutions.

The approval for Dr.G.U. Pope College of Engineering, Jayaraj Annapackiam CSI College of Engineering, Padmavathi College of Engineering and V.K.K. Vijayan Engineering Colleges has been withdrawn. In the case of Sri Krishna College of Engineering, a reduction in intake by 50 per cent each in Computer Science Engineering (CSE), Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) and Information Technology (IT) has been recommended, said AICTE Southern Regional officials.

The approval has been withdrawn after an inspection by expert teams as the institutions fell short of AICTE stipulated norms, including infrastructural deficiencies. Cases were pending with the CBI against Padmvathi and V.K.K. Vijayan engineering colleges, sources said.

Approvals are pending with the AICTE for 30 technical institutions, including engineering, pharmacy and polytechnics. Excel Group of Institutions have five approvals pending and Raja Group of Institutions have three approvals pending along with few business schools, pharmacy institutes, stand alone institutions offering MCA and polytechnics. There are various reasons for keeping the approvals pending which could even include the failure of the institutions to pay the required approval fee, said officials.

The AICTE has also announced a schedule for appeal for new and existing institutions. All the institutions in the southern region where expert visit has been conducted for approval for the year 2011-12 (new institutions, conversion and new program in existing institution) but not granted approval due to deficiencies could appeal with the AICTE headquarters on June 18. The schedule for submission of appeal at AICTE's southern regional office starts from June 15.
