Protest over MOI decision:3 members of Goa golden jubilee panel resign

Protesting government decision to include English as Medium of Instruction (MOI) in elementary education in the state, three senior members appointed to Goa
Golden Jubilee Year Liberation Advisory Committee sent in their resignations.

Former Chief Minister Shashikala Kakodkar, senior writer Uday Bhembre and freedom fighter Naguesh Karmali announced their resignations from the government-appointed committee.

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat had formed the committee to finalise programmes to celebrate golden jubilee of Goas liberation from the Portuguese rule.

The state was liberated on December 19, 1961.

Goa cabinet on May 25 had allowed English as MOI along with Konkani and Marathi. The government decision has not gone down well with many people who feel that nobody would opt to learn in Konkani/Marathi when they could learn in English
medium.

Bhembre also announced that he will give back the state cultural award, which was bestowed on him in 2007-08. He has also resigned from Kala Academys committee and also the Official Language Act committee.

Kakodkar said that the resignations are sign of protest against governments decision.

All Goa Freedom Fighters Association has already announced its protest by boycotting the state government functions on June 18 to mark the Revolution Day when clarion call for direct action against Portuguese was given by freedom
fighters.

The freedom fighters have decided to stand outside the Azad Maidan, Lohia Maidan and Kranti Maidan in Panaji, Margao and Ponda where the functions would be held on June 18.
