Tamil Nadu moves SC to erase Kanimozhi from texts

Updated on: Tuesday, June 14, 2011

The Tamil Nadu government on Monday moved the Supreme Court to prevent school children from reading text books eulogising DMK leader M Karunanidhi or hearing poems penned by his daughter Kanimozhi.

In its special leave petition, the state government appealed against a June 10 order of the Madras High Court, which stayed the AIADMK government's decision to postpone implementation of Uniform School Education scheme (USE) from this academic year.

Immediately after getting a massive mandate in the assembly polls, the Jayalaltihaa government had amended the Tamil Nadu Uniform System of School Education Act to postpone the new syllabus on the ground that it needed to be vetted by educationists.

What had miffed the AIADMK government was the alleged misuse of power by the earlier regime to fill text books for children from class I to VI with eulogies of Karunanidhi. It stated in its appeal before the apex court that the amendment aimed to rid the syllabus of politics to make it more professional.

With schools reopening on June 15 for the new academic session, a vacation bench comprising Justices B S Chauhan and Swatanter Kumar agreed to the request of senior advocate P P Rao and TN additional advocate general Guru Krishna Kumar and fixed hearing on the appeal for Tuesday.
