The government is looking at ways to eliminate the need of domicile certificates for those who were born and brought up in the state. According to information, the state revenue department is likely to convene a meeting on this issue in a day or two. Domicile certificates are a mandatory requirement currently for admissions to colleges and for various government schemes. The certificate, which proves that a person has stayed in the state for 15 of the last 20 years, is even insisted in the case of people born and brought up in the state.
During a meeting with opposition MLAs on June 10, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan had indicated that steps would be taken to get rid of the domicile requirement for locals soon. MLAs had unanimously demanded the waiver of the condition arguing that documents like birth certificates, school and college leaving certificates, which are already in possession of people, could be used as proof to determine whether he/ she fulfilled the 15-year stay norm.
