Of the nearly 16.4 lakh students who appeared for the secondary school certificate (SSC) examination in March, the marksheets of 79 will be withheld if they do not pay the exam fees before the declaration of results. The SSC results are expected within a week. Among the defaulting students are four from St Mary Ann English High School in Bhandup, 52 from Khwaja Bande Urdu School in Solapur and 23 from a school in Nagpur.
Chairperson of the Maharashtra State Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board Ujwala Patil said, “The board had issued notices to the managements of the erring schools, but there was no response. Thereafter, several reminders were sent but to no avail." Penalties were imposed on the students for non-payment of the exam fees, but these too haven’t been paid. “The board has decided to hold back the results of the defaulting students.” Of the 79 defaulting students, 55 had missed their first paper due to negligence by the administration of their schools.
TOI was first to report how 55 students from Khwaja Bande Urdu School were not allowed to appear for the first paper as their school had failed to submit their papers to the board. The students were issued hall tickets after school education minister Rajendra Darda and Congress MLA Praniti Shinde intervened. This time too, Shinde has taken the initiative to bail out the students. “I have taken up the issue with the education minister and secretary to ensure that these students are not left in the lurch,” Shinde said. Darda was not available for comment.
A senior education department official said, “Either students or the managements of their schools will have to pay the exam fee to get the results. However, the school education minister can waive the penalty levied on the defaulting students.”
