The Joint Admission Board (JAB) of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have taken another step to make sure that few valuable seat do not go without any takers at their campuses.
In a decision taken on 6 June, the board decided to conduct one more round of admission, thus allowing more students to sign up for the country's premier tech schools and curtail the non-takers.
Sanjay Dhande, Director, IIT-Kanpur told that instances of seats falling vacant in the IITs, IT-BHU and ISM-Dhanbad were discussed. Some students accept the admission, deposit the full advance amount and then do not join the course. This year, the board hopes to reduce vacancies by conducting three rounds of admissions.
As a result, this means three rounds of admissions will be held this year.
Every year, lakhs of students vie to get into the hallowed IITs. One startling fact emerged when admissions closed in 2009, there weren't enough qualified candidates to fill up the reserved seats on offer for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes or the physically challenged.
The admission schedule for the three rounds will be announced on 7 June.
