Students in CBSE’s std X would receive a novel report card this year with gradings on elements like attitude towards teachers and friends. The report card, which runs into six pages, evaluated students on their social and emotional qualities along with academic performance in the class. While the report card carries comprehensive details about the student’s performance in various subjects, it also gives an insight in to his or her personality as well.
Along with the scholastic areas, the performances of students in various subjects where they are evaluated in formative (classroom performance) and summative (semester-end test) ways, the students have been evaluated on co-scholastic areas. The report card is divided in two parts. While part I looks at students’ performance in two exams, part II delves in to his or her life skills, creative and critical thinking, problem solving, decision making and self-awareness, emotional capacity to cope with stress, emotions and attitude towards teachers, classmates, environment and value system.
Principal of DAV High School, Jose Kurien said, “The report card this year defines the personality of the child in totality. Children and parents will come to know their strengths and weaknesses. Negative personality traits of the child like indiscipline will not reflect in the report card, but his performance in class, capacity to work in team, capacity to tolerate people, attitude towards teachers and fellow students will be graded.”
Kurien said that there were apprehensions about the new report card initially but the stakeholders now feel that it is a helpful tool for them. “It will not only evaluate the students on their year’s performance, but will also help them to work on their weaknesses in the future. Parents can help their wards to improve on their weak points after getting the new report cards,” said Vineet Joshi, the chairman of the CBSE.
