The playground of St Mary’s High School (ICSE) in Mazgaon was abuzz with activity on Sunday as scores of parents joined faculty members and management officials to discuss future course of action following the institute’s derecognition. “The management has agreed to work with us. We will approach the education department and appeal against the derecognition order,” said vice president of the school’s Parent-Teacher Association, Ramesh Mistry. The management has assured parents that the issue will be resolved soon and the school will re-open on June 13.
Parents, some of whom were accompanied by their wards, grilled the management over the derecognition notice in the school’s auditorium. The school’s management, represented by principal Father Baptist Pinto and principal of St Xavier’s College Father Frazer Mascarenhas, gave a patient hearing to the parents and tried to put their fears to rest.
“The school management knew about this for two years, but did nothing. What will they change now? We are bearing the brunt of their ignorance,” said a frustrated father. Some parents told TOI that they were planning to approach the education department themselves instead of waiting for St Mary’s management to file the appeal. Father Mascarenhas told TOI, “It was wrong on the education department’s part to send such an order so close to the school’s re-opening. We will appeal to the higher authorities immediately.”
Meanwhile, the Bombay Catholic Sabha (BCS) has taken strong exception to political interference in the matter. “Leaders are trying to gain political mileage out of the situation. We urge the government to take back the ex-parte order and give the school a fair hearing,” read a statement issued by the BCS.
