The 23rd convocation of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) was held here on Monday.
Delivering the convocation address Michael Vetha Siromony, Director and Vice-Chancellor, Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development, said IGNOU played an important role in the development of the country. Hard work and commitment were the prime requisites to excel.
Education was empowerment, but only 15 per cent of the youth in the country entered into the higher education, he said.
Certificates to students from Chennai and Madurai region were distributed at the convocation.
A total of 7,456 graduates were awarded the degree and diploma certificates, of which 1,304 received in person and the rest in absentia. There are two gold medallists from the Chennai region, IGNOU authorities said.
