Education, water and power departments in Uttarakhand have been directed to work in tandem to provide basic facilities of potable water, electricity and toilet in all state schools within a fixed time frame.

State Chief Secretary, Subhash Kumar gave the instructions during a weekly review meeting in view of a directive from the Supreme Court for providing basic amenities in schools, an official release said.

Kumar was informed that since the last meeting convened on May 18, 307 schools have been provided with drinking water facility, while an action plan has been prepared for the other 660 schools through pipelines, hand pumps and rain-harvesting, the release said.

Around 55 schools are situated far away from water sources and so they would be provided the facility through generators, it said.

In order to provide toilet facilities in 1,103 schools, Kumar directed the officials to prepare a monthly target plan and try to complete it by October.

The Chief Secretary asked the Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) to start the work for electrifying 5,000 schools from next week and also fix a time frame for the remaining 5,526 schools.

The apex court had directed all the state government's to provide basic amenities of drinking water, toilet and electricity to all schools by May 31 this year.

Uttarakhand school education Director C S Gwal said that most of the schools in the state have basic amenities and the government is trying hard to extend such facilities to the remaining schools within a stipulated time frame.
