Chavan to recommend setting up IIM, IIIT in Maharashtra

In a bid to enhance the quality of education in Maharashtra, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has decided to recommend setting up of IIM and Indian Institute of Information Technology in the state along with a centre of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Marathwada.

A proposal to this effect will be forwarded to the Centre, sources in the Higher and Technical Education Department said. Similarly, research scholarships will be provided to the students in all fields, they said.

Sources said that a centre of National Law University will also be sought for the state.

A proposal to set up eight new girls' hostels has also been cleared. Out of the total eight, two will be set up in Mumbai in the suburbs of 1,000 capacity. Sources said expense of Rs 70 crore to Rs 80 crore will be incurred and will be raised through the supplementary demands.

Chavan also made it clear that the Government Resolution (GR) of October 30, 2010 for sanctioning new colleges, will be applicable this time too. About 296 proposals from all universities Management councils have been received.

Chavan said, "Provisions of the GR should be strictly adhered to, while clearing proposals for new colleges."

According to sources, 125 to 140 colleges will be sanctioned this year as they fulfill all norms stipulated in the GR
