With hundreds of chapters in cities all over India and abroad, SPIC MACAY, a non-governmental, non-profit and voluntary movement conducts concerts of classical music, dance and folk arts, theatre, screening of classic films, heritage walks to monuments of historical and cultural significance, talks by eminent persons etc. in educational institutions in two series VIRASAT and FEST, every year. A national convention is conducted by bringing the youth from the entire country in a common platform, where they can exchange ideas, share experiences and provide a way forward for SPIC MACAY for realizing its objectives. In an ashram like setting, the convention held each year during the summer vacation is designed to inspire the delegates to propagate the movement in the year ahead.
The 26th National Convention of SPIC MACAY is going to be organized at Ravenshaw University, Cuttack of the Odisha Chapter, from May 23-29, 2011. More than 1200 students and 400 guests are expected to be the participants of this seven –day power-packed event. President Pratibha Devising Patil is expected to inaugurate the convention. In the series of classical music, dance and folk music concerts, Smt. Girija Devi (Vocalist), Pt. Birju Maharaj (Kathak), Prof. Madan Gopal Singh (Sufi), Sujata Mahapatra (Odissi), Sh. Venkatesh Kuar (Vocalist), Mayurbhanj Chhau etc. are scheduled. People like Shyam Benegal (to present ‘the making of the Gandhi’) and Anjolie Ela Menon (Painting) and others are also expected to be there, presenting talks, theatre-performances etc. Students and teachers will be involved in workshop-intensives of classical and related art forms (like music, painting, dance, crafts etc) during the convention under one of the top artists of every field.
