The fees for private medical and engineering colleges this academic year will rise by 15% and 7.5%, but there is some good news. The fee regulation committee will allow colleges with a higher number of teachers with PhD qualification and accredited courses to charge their students more.
The committee is including benchmarks set by AICTE. This will mean that while the students will pay more, they can be assured that it will be towards quality of education. A college where PhD teachers are at least 5% of the total faculty will be allowed to raise its fees by 3 per cent. If 50% of the courses are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation, then the college will be allowed to hike the tuition and development fees by 3 per cent. If all the courses are accredited, the college can increase the fee by 5 per cent.
The Shikshan Shulka Samiti has issued circulars to all colleges, explaining details about the proposal of interim fee hike. Forms have been sent to colleges asking them to submit their proposal. Colleges are expected to send their proposed fee hikes fulfilling the required parameters by May 31.
