Of 10 lakh class X students who were to write the CBSE board exams this year, 5.5 lakh dropped out since the exams were optional. Nevertheless, the Central Board of Secondary Education will issue report cards to all students, factoring in internal assessment by schools of the students who did not appear for the national tests. Both sets of students will receive their report cards on the same day; those getting grades below ‘D’ would be required to write a test before July.
The report cards will take a comprehensive look at several aspects of a student’s life, including non-scholastic areas. “They will have detailed information about both scholastic and non-scholastic aspects. Students will not only be evaluated on the entire year’s performance, but also be helped to work on weaknesses for the future,” said Vineet Joshi, chairman, CBSE. Citing an example, he said the report card of a student will mention if he or she has poor communication skills. “Thus, parents can work on their wards’ weaknesses.”
As for students with grades below ‘D’, Joshi said, “If they clear the re-exam, they will be promoted to class XI. Otherwise they will have to repeat class X. For students who opted for school tests, their schools examined them on summative assessment methods the board (CBSE) suggested.”
Deepshikha Srivastava, principal, Rajhans Vidyalaya, Andheri, said, “We have sent the details of every student to the board, including the ones who opted out of the board exams. All report cards will be dispatched by the board. Two years ago, we adopted several descriptive indicators laid down by the board under the continuous and comprehensive evaluation system. The report cards will have exhaustive information on students’ performance in the classroom and in tests.”
