New building of Uttarakhand open varsity inaugurated

The administrative building of Uttarakhand Open University has been inaugurated by Governor Margaret Alva and Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank at Teenpaani area in Nainital district.

Envisioned to provide better education in the state, the building has been constructed on 10 hectares of land at a cost of Rs 25 crore.

Addressing the inaugural function yesterday, Alva hoped that the University would provide mainstream education and employment to those living in remote hilly areas, an official release said .

Appreciating the work being done in the field of education in the state, she said the technical training provided by the University would enable students to get employed in industrial groups. This would help weed out unemployment and would also upgrade the living standard of their families.

Subjects like Vedic karmakand, Ayurved, Yoga, Palmistry,Panchayati Raj, Food Production and Housekeeping through certificate courses would prove beneficial, she said while lauding the University's efforts in starting 15 more technical courses.

Alva also expressed happiness over its focus on Women's Education.

She expressed gratitude to Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh for transfer of forest land for the purpose and directed the Uttar Pradesh Nirman Nigam agency to complete the construction work within a year.

CM Pokhriyal said he was committed to developing the hill state as an 'Education Hub.'

"Uttarakhand tops the list of states falling in the Himalayan region in the field of education", he said.

Assuring all possible support from the government he oped that it would prove to be a milestone in the field of higher education at a time when the role of distance learning was becoming more crucial.

State Education Minister Govind Singh Bisht said the government was taking many positive steps in the field of education and had provided employment to 27,000 youths in the education department.

Vice-Chancellor of the University Prof Vinay Kumar Pathak said the varsity has been running more than 200 centres in the remote areas of the state. The number of courses run by it were enhanced from 75 to 101 this year in which 6,776 students have been registered.
