For the first time, the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, which declared the class X ICSE and class XII ISC results on Tuesday, did not announce all-India toppers in a bid to reduce stress and cut down competition among students. In both board exams, girls outdid boys. But confusion reigned among students in Mumbai as several city schools adopted the state’s best-5 policy to calculate final percentages, pushing the number of 90% scorers to almost half of the class strength. However, some schools took into consideration all seven subjects.
This year, the all-India pass percentage for Indian Certificate for Secondary Education (ICSE) students was 98.61 – a marginal increase of 0.3% from 2010. For SC, ST and OBC candidates, the pass percentage was 100. Of the 1.22 lakh students who took the exam this year, 1.20 lakh cleared it. While the pass percentage for girls was 99.15, boys trailed behind at 98.19. This trend was also reflected in Maharashtra’s performance, where the overall pass percentage rose by 0.17% to 99.93. The pass percentage for girls was 99.98, while 99.89% boys in the state cleared the exam.
The lowest pass percentage among core subjects was in economics; 91.3% of students across India cleared the subject. This was followed by math, where the all-India pass percentage was 94.36. Meanwhile, the all-India pass percentage for the Indian School Certificate (ISC) increased by 0.13% to 97.24. The pass percentage of students in Maharashtra saw a 2.60% rise; it stands at a high 99.02 per cent.
