Schools in the city are hiring BEd graduates not only for teaching but also for drafting their curriculum and counselling students.
As the numbers of international schools in the city are on the rise, developing an internal curriculum to meet specific needs of the students is becoming a trend. So, teachers are being recruited to curriculum development cells (CDCs) which have been recently started in many schools in order to draft the curriculum. Not only schools, but also NGOs are hiring BEd graduates as they have good communication skills.
Adelaide Vaz, principal of St Xaviers’ Institute of Education in Churchgate, said, “These days, many schools prepare their own curriculum for smaller classes. Many of our teachers have been hired by schools for this purpose. Several ICSE and international schools have also shown interest in our candidates. It is a good boost for our students.”
Some BEd schools also train their students in how to plan class-specific lessons. This acts as an advantage for students. “This year, there were around 44 schools that came to our college during campus placements,” she said. Mintu Sinha, principal of Bombay Teachers’ Training College in Colaba, said, “Though training candidates in drafting the curriculum is not an integral part of the syllabus and is covered only in one section, many schools hire teachers for this purpose as they feel that they have the right aptitude for such jobs.”
According to Sudeshna Chatterjee, principal of Jamnabai Narsee School in Juhu, “Candidates who have been hired will be mentored for a year. Planning lessons and curriculum for students up to STD VIII plays an important role after the new continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE) process was introduced in the last academic year.”
Many NGOs are hiring BEd candidates during campus placements. “They hire our teachers as counsellors as they have good communication skills, which help them in their social cause. Most of the NGOs who hire these candidates work in the field of education. NGOs like Akanksha hire our candidates regularly,” said Vaz.
